Hi Tumblr. It’s 4 AM where I am. Having trouble sleeping so I doodled for a bit. I post doodles on Twitter. It’s private though. Mostly because I like to whine a lot about things. But occasionally I post doodles.

Anyway, I drew a vaguely Asian girl, which almost turned into a Velma. And then I turned her into a Velma anyway.

Also, my actual computer is in the shop. It was overheating pretty badly. I’ve been using my brother’s iMac for a while. But Imma need a decent laptop for my internship, so I had to have it fixed up. I’m mostly using this computer for mostly work. Work. So much work…

I should sleep.

This is sorta a procrastination piece. Sorry clients! But I sorta needed a slight break from the pressure of work and school. Blegh.

Hey peeps. One of the things keeping me busy is that I recently got commissioned to make silly comics for an international publication. I’m pretty excited about it, actually. Anyway, this is one of the strips they rejected. They made the right decision.

Blegh. But AnonyGhost will soon go through a make-over as I want a better character design for this dude. I’ve always wanted a ghost character so I don’t just want to make this guy a one-strip thing.

Guff!

Since I have no new art to post, I thought I’d share some old, random sketches I made in my notebooks that I initially thought wasn’t worth posting. It’s nothing special, but it’ll have to do for now.

Random notes from Archeology, French, Philippine Art History, and Marketing class notes are scribbled here and there. Nothing worth reading really, but I doodle a lot in class or when I’m idle and far from my computer. There are more drawings than notes in these books. And my notes are often confusing or unorganized. Haha!

Anyway, thanks for following again guys! :)

Coff-Tea & Cramps

Someone mistakenly put tea leaves in the coffee jar and it got mixed in with the grounds. So it’s coff-tea now. I think I heard coff-tea in Would I Lie To You, but I can’t be sure.

Currently drinking it now in my bed as I’m typing this, my feet crossed into a lotus position in danger of cramping. This is my work position. Mostly because my desk is too cluttered with books and all sorts of guff.

Anyway, hi guys. I know there hasn’t been a lot going on here, but I have been busy. But to put some of you at peace… Yes, I am still continuing Burton X PKMN. I know most of you are only following me for that and I greatly appreciate it none the less. So thank you.

And I want to say an even bigger thank you to all of you for sticking around and liking my silly drawings. You’re all making it difficult for me to hate myself and my work. Haha!

I raise my glass of coff-tea to you! And now it’s back to work for me. Good night.

I gotta tell you guys, I found myself really stumped with Diglett and Dugtrio. It was the nose. It was too goofy and I couldn’t find a way to make it seem Burtony enough and not cliché.

So I did what I always do, I browsed through the art of Tim Burton once again for inspiration. And I found my answer in Char Boy, which is probably one of Mr. Burton’s lesser known tales.

The popular idea of Tim Burton characters are all thin and big eyes and whatnot, but apparently the vocabulary of this style is larger than I thought. Very interesting and worth exploring. :)

Side note: If I cram a Diglett into the hole with a Dugtrio, can I call it a Dugquartet?

L’Enfant de Janice {2013}

This piece is my contribution for Haute Auteur 2013 which is the annual silent film competition by the UP Cineastes. Along with an exhibition of the entries, there will also be an art exhibit of which I am a part of along with some excellent art buddies like Jamie Cabatit, Bernard Gatus, and Rob Cham.

The exhibition will be open for viewing on February 27 - March 1 at the Old Film Lobby, Plaridel Hall, UP DIliman CMC, and on March 4 – March 8 at the Greenbelt 3 Lobby, Makati City.

Also the following is gonna be a fairly long and possibly rambly rationale of this piece…

In Philippine mythology there is a creature called the Tiyanak, which is basically a demon baby. If a baby dies before a Catholic baptism, supposedly, it is denied entrance to Heaven and comes back as, quite literally, a monster of a child.

Now, in Philippine pop culture the Tiyanak has been called “Anak Ni Janice” which translated into English means, “The Child of Janice” which is in reference to a horror movie about a tiyanak, entitled “Anak Ni Janice,” in which had a mother facing facts that her child was a demon baby. I barely remember the movie as I hadn’t seen it in such a long time.

So anyway, Haute Auteur’s theme this year is about modern societal horrors. I figured I wanted to reference something from Philippine cinema as well as Philippine mythological horrors, which is the majority of Philippine mythology anyway.

So this piece is about the issue of gender and sexuality. If you notice, there’s a neutrois symbol on the baby’s forehead because at this stage of a human’s life supposedly none, not even the baby itself, knows what its gender or sexuality is and we should be fine with that and shouldn’t really deciding for it what it should be. Let the human decide for itself what it wants to be at it’s own time.

But in the Philippines, the conservative idea of gender binarism is prevalent and is gospel truth to most. I think humans are far more complicated than that though, but a major part of society may disagree. So, this painting is of a baby that was “vandalized” with dehumanizing, bright-orange scribbles to be perceived as a demon baby for being seen as something that doesn’t fit traditional labels and tagged with “L’Enfant de Janice” which translates to “The Child of Janice” or “Anak ni Janice.” I wrote it in French to get into the Haute Auteur spirit.

So anyway, something that shouldn’t be seen by as an appalling idea, is perceived as a “horror.” This might be an overly biased piece and I don’t expect anyone to agree with me though. But, I’m hoping this piece sparks more public discussions in the Philippines about gender and sexuality at the very least.

On a side note though, I’ve a hunch that the Tiyanak might be an invention of the church. Because in the Philippines, during Spanish colonial times, the Spanish friars often demonized a lot of non-Christian activities. Kind of like how Catholics took over December 25 to become Christmas. Anyway, probably to frighten Filipinos into getting their babies baptized, they invented the Tiyanak? Maybe? Or probably not?
