Ave Aves {2014}

Koji commissioned me to make the poster for his thesis film. He wanted something that looked like a vintage National Geographic cover. But I like taking free-reign on design so I went and played with the idea instead.

I only worked on this for two days due to my busy schedule and the tight deadline. So it’s a bit rough, but I’m fairly happy with it.

Below the poster are the initial studies I made before I started working on it. It’s an experimental art film that attempts to answer the question of why a bird is like an encyclopedia.

I decided to frame a magnified view of the feathers. I think, without the gold embellishments, one could view the feathers in a different light. Funny how visual elements can influence your perception.

Anyway, you can watch the teaser HERE.

Also, thanks for the job, Koji!

This was a random idea I got while I was at work. It began with a dumb Twitter Doodle, and I ended up wanting to have it on a shirt. So here we are…
The tank top version looks cool, but I could never pull off a tank.

The Orphanage {2012 - 2013}

"The Elsabeth Grinn Home for the Peculiar and the Unwanted, a place as strange and as sinister as its children."

Above are some of the 100 cards I made for The Orphanage, a card set for Neonmob. Respectively from right to left is Collin Lilikoi, Esme Bavelier, Loraine Eeley, and Fredrik Jorwik. Each child has a story and a personality and I hope I communicated that well enough through each character design. I really enjoyed making this set. It’s one of the coolest projects I’ve ever been commissioned to do.

Anyway so I really like ghost stories or eerie tales in general. It’s actually one of the creative factors that helped me develop this set.

And I thought I’d do a bit of a collaboration with you guys! So here’s what we’ll do, you go and collect some cards of The Orphanage set. And the challenge is, for you come up with a short story involving some of the children you’ve collected.

Link me to your story, and the best stories will be illustrated by me. Collaborate with me please! Should be fun! This is also my attempt to induce the spirit of the pumpkin king into your bones. It’s October! Halloween draws nigh.

And actually, Renee Ya, a blogger, already wrote something involving my characters. It’s pretty cool. She told the story of a dream she recently had and some of my characters made a cameo. Haha! Read it here.

Also, I’ve written about the background of the Orphanage here if you want to read it.

All hail the pumpkin king!

Cupid’s Arrows

I entered this into Threadless’ Minimalism Challenge. I was making simple designs anyway, so I thought I’d try for it. Why not? Anyway, I hope it was pretty clear that the design is about how not all romances work out.

Win or lose, I’m just happy that I got to stretch my design muscles a bit.

Anyway, if you would, please give it a score. A 5 would be nice. A 5, plus a comment would be better. Haha!

Also, SCORE THIS TOO!

Help me name this thing? Hmm?I’m currently being commissioned to design monsters for a thing. I can’t really say much about it yet. Anyway, this little critter wasn’t doing it for me. I felt that it wasn’t going to work for the brand, so I didn’t submit it in. But I kind of still like it. It’s just a study though, so the idea isn’t fully developed.
And then I thought I’d try and encourage you guys to use a bit of imagination and creativity. Why not? If there’s one thing I hope to inspire in people, is for you all to be interesting and clever, which is what creativity is all about.
So what would you call this beasty? Or what even is it?

Hi!

I killed a bit of time the other day and made another shirt entry for Threadless. If you have the time, please give it a score. It would be most appreciated if you give it a score of 5 and if you leave a nice comment. Thanks guys. :)

MMORPG Blues {2013}This was the comic I did for issue #99 ImagineFX. If you aren’t aware of it yet, I’ve been making comics for a tiny feature on ImagineFX for the past few issues now. It’s pretty cool. Last month’s theme was about game art, so I did something about MMO’s.But the point is, it’s kinda cool to have HatBoy in a magazine. Haha!Also, I’m mostly posting this because I haven’t posted in a while mostly because I’ve been too busy to make anything for this blog. So yeah, sorry about that. School’s really kicking my ass right now. I’ve been needing health potions like there’s no tomorrow, because this boss battle of a thesis is throwing me punches that I can’t seem to dodge. Anyway, back to work.
You should click to embiggen. This comic wasn’t designed to be on Tumblr. Or you could buy the magazine? Haha!

Sketch WIP {07-12-2013}
Doodled this thing in the College of Fine Arts Library yesterday while waiting for my next class. I’ll be spending a lot of time in the various libraries in uni this semester. Gonna be reading up on a ton for thesis and mooching off of the wifi. It’s pretty crap wifi, but whatever.My thesis will concern visual semantics and how they affect information retention. So far I’m in the research stage. So if any of you know of any decent reads that you can recommend concerning these topics, I’d love to hear them please. :)I’ve been reading up on old-ish books on visual cognition and learning and memory processes currently. Books that I had to go to the creepy part of the Social Sciences section of the library to get. It was so dark and musty and spooky. I felt like I was in an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark waiting to happen. Anyway, good luck to me. And good day to you. :)

Bulbasaur / Ivysaur / Venusaur

Part of The Tim Burton x PKMN Project By Vaughn Pinpin

When I started this project, I never expected to get so much positive reactions. And I’m so very thankful that so many of you guys like it. But when I started this project, I wasn’t expecting people to want prints of it. So the first few Pokemon were all drawn in small 72 dpi files, which isn’t enough of a resolution for a decent print.

So, I have to re-draw everyone up to Butterfree and make them print-ready. So far, I’ve re-drawn up to Venusaur. This is also giving me a chance to gussy up my initial concepts. Anyway, these three are now available as prints over at my Society6 Shop.

I hope you buy a print or two, as it’ll help so much to relieve some of my financial troubles. Haha! But if you do want to make your walls less boring, buy a print please. Thanks again for the love, everyone. :D

And FYI, this project is still on going. I know I’ve been slow with updating it, but I have been real busy with work and my final year at uni. Now, as soon as I’ve dealt with most of my obligations, I’ll put this project back into hyperdrive. But for now, it’s going on a bit of a hiatus. I hope you all understand.

HatBoy: Sometimes He Posts Stuff
So, I did something stupid today. I procrastinated and made this logo for my blog. Stretched my graphic design muscles for a bit and played around in Adobe Illustrator.
Sometimes it’s nice to just take a bit of a break from work and school and get creative for yourself. Although, I do not recommend it if you’re in the same situation like me, in which I am swamped with work. Blegh.
Meh. This could be better though.
Yeah. Anyway, let me just thank everyone who messaged me kind words yesterday concerning my angsty blog post. It’s really cool. Sorry if I haven’t replied to you. I’ve no real excuse other than I have weird social issues where I have trouble responding to Internet people. I’m so sorry, but I do appreciate every message. I do. Thank you so much.
And now I go back to work.
