During my animation class.
It was a 6 hour class filled with confusion and frustration.
So last week was the first week of my 4th year in art college. Also, animation class began. It’s too early to tell whether it sucks or not, but I barely enjoyed my first day. I was pretty annoyed over the fact that the class apparently isn’t going to teach traditional hand-drawn animation or any other technique of animation except 3D animation, like Pixar stuff but on shit computers and on a shit freeware software because the college has no money for industry standard software. I was more so annoyed of the fact that the professor said that the course will be just about 3D animation because presently the animation industry is in great demand for 3D artists. That may be true, but the college is supposed to teach us the arts not try and get us a job.
Because going to college isn’t really something you go through just to get a job. Or at least it shouldn’t be anyway. Although yes, companies do tend to hire those with degrees, but going to college used to be because people had a thirst for knowledge. You go to college because you have passion for a certain field. And that’s become the main reason why I even bother with staying in school, because I’m severely passionate about art and I want to learn more about it.
Anyway recently, I’ve grown very interested in animation and I wish to pursue it a bit and hopefully make an animated short in the near future. I wanted hand-drawn animation, if it was good enough for a Mr. Walt Disney then it should be good enough for me. But the college has decided it wasn’t worth teaching anymore.
I like 3D animation, sure. But I would rather make hand-drawn animation as I find that its charm is more beautiful and I would love to study it just because I want to. Hand-drawn animation is not dead and it’s still massively beautiful and I think it should be taught at supposedly the premier art school in the country. It’s an art form and a technique. There are many ways to tell stories now. We have the option to choose which form or medium would best suit a story, aesthetically. And just because 3D animation is what’s “in” at the moment, doesn’t mean it will be the only answer for animated storytelling.
Also, Blender sucks massively. Maya forever!
