High ResolutionDecode {2013}
This is my piece for ReDiscovery. It’s an art show inspired by Daft Punk over at Gauntlet Gallery in San Francisco. It’s a bit of a celebration for Random Access Memories. Opening reception is on May 18th, which I think is today. If you live near by, do drop by.
I’m pretty excited about the show actually. Some really amazing artists are going to be a part of it like Phil Noto, Andre De Freitas, and John Larriva. Great stuff! Should be an amazing show.
This is the first time I’m going to be a part of a show with a really amazing collection of artists, so I’m really stoked.
BTW, this piece was inspired by Get Lucky. Aw yiss…
{Also, you should click the image to get a better view. Tumblr has a problem with art with wide dimensions}

Not much new here recently. Sorry about that. As my school year comes to an end, I’ve been drowning in final requirements.
I’ll see all of you next month. Just let me just go punch schoolwork in the butt. -

This piece is my contribution for Haute Auteur 2013 which is the annual silent film competition by the UP Cineastes. If you’re not too geographically challenged, please do drop by. The exhibition will be open for viewing on February 27 - March 1 at the Old Film Lobby, Plaridel Hall, UP DIliman CMC, and on March 4 – March 8 at the Greenbelt 3 Lobby, Makati City.Also, this is available as a print in case you want one? Yes? Click here to make your walls less boring.
Also the following is gonna be a fairly long and possibly rambly rationale of this piece…

In Philippine mythology there is a creature called the Tiyanak, which is basically a demon baby. If a baby dies before a Catholic baptism, supposedly, it is denied entrance to Heaven and comes back as, quite literally, a monster of a child.Now, in Philippine pop culture the Tiyanak has been called “Anak Ni Janice” which translated into English means, “The Child of Janice” which is in reference to a horror movie about a tiyanak, entitled “Anak Ni Janice,” in which had a mother facing facts that her child was a demon baby. I barely remember the movie as I hadn’t seen it in such a long time.So anyway, Haute Auteur’s theme this year is about modern societal horrors. I figured I wanted to reference something from Philippine cinema as well as Philippine mythological horrors, which is the majority of Philippine mythology anyway.So this piece is about the issue of gender and sexuality. If you notice, there’s a neutrois symbol on the baby’s forehead because at this stage of a human’s life supposedly none, not even the baby itself, knows what its gender or sexuality is and we should be fine with that and shouldn’t really deciding for it what it should be. Let the human decide for itself what it wants to be at it’s own time.But in the Philippines, the conservative idea of gender binarism is prevalent and is gospel truth to most. I think humans are far more complicated than that though, but a major part of society may disagree. So, this painting is of a baby that was “vandalized” with dehumanizing, bright-orange scribbles to be perceived as a demon baby for being seen as something that doesn’t fit traditional labels and tagged with “L’Enfant de Janice” which translates to “The Child of Janice” or “Anak ni Janice.” I wrote it in French to get into the Haute Auteur spirit.
So anyway, something that shouldn’t be seen by as an appalling idea, is perceived as a “horror.” This might be an overly biased piece and I don’t expect anyone to agree with me though. But, I’m hoping this piece sparks more public discussions in the Philippines about gender and sexuality at the very least.
On a side note though, I’ve a hunch that the Tiyanak might be an invention of the church. Because in the Philippines, during Spanish colonial times, the Spanish friars often demonized a lot of non-Christian activities. Kind of like how Catholics took over December 25 to become Christmas. Anyway, probably to frighten Filipinos into getting their babies baptized, they invented the Tiyanak? Maybe? Or probably not?Anyway, see you at the exhibition. Maybe? High ResolutionStimulate {2013}
A portrait of a lonely man on Valentine’s Day.
This painting is a couple of days late. I was going to post this on Valentine’s Day, but I found myself too busy to find time for it. It was supposed to be humorous and aimed at single peeps. Also, this is like a vague attempt at erotica art. Maybe. Haha!Happy post-Valentine’s Day though.
This is also available as a print over at my shop.

High ResolutionJust a magnified portion of the piece.

High ResolutionSo I made this as an entry for the Graphika Manila book this year. I’m not expecting anything at the moment. I don’t know if it will be included in the book or not. But eitherway, I’m fairly proud of this piece even though I’m second guessing a few things about this piece.
Anyway, I realize, nearly every year since I made the cover of the GM Book, I’ve been using Graphika Manila as an excuse and motivation to make a decent piece of art. But I always try and do something I haven’t done before. So every entry I send in, from hence forth and before, have been wrought with experimentation. So it’s a great learning experience. In or out, at least I think I took another step forward in my artistic journey.
Anyway, this piece is about being consumed by thoughts or ideas or emotions. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. Like right now, my insecurities pile on and can cripple me emotionally and somewhat physically. A bit of depression can encourage lethargy and apathy. Anyway, I’m fine. That’s partially why I made this. Therapeutic art making I guess. It heals in a sense.
PS: Plus 5 awesome points to those who know the medusoid mycelium reference. Hint: It’s from my favorite book series as a kid. :)
This piece is also available as a print by the way over at my Society 6.
And if you have the time and haven’t scored yet, please score my entry for that Bravest Warriors design contest. Thanks guys.
Also, I’ll try and get Burton X PKMN project back on track next week Friday hopefully after my exams. I’ve been itching to get back on it, but life happens. Still, sorry for not updating. I do read all the mail, and I will try to reply to all of you. Please be patient. :|

High Resolution25. MegaMan Juno
by Vaughn Pinpin
Hola guys! The MegaMan Boss Battle has begun!
It’s a tribute show for MegaMan’s 25th Anniversary. The first 40 are already up and more will be revealed over the coming weeks.
This is my contribution, MegaMan Juno from MegaMan Legends. I tried to make it look like he’s ancient tech so I did a somewhat drastic re-design inspired by mostly ancient Mesoamerican art but I mixed in some Japanese and Hindu art in there. Thought it would make it more fun and interesting.
And once again, a ton of experimentation went into this. You’ve actually caught me in an awkward state of artistic puberty or something. I’m still trying to find myself as an artist so I’m in an exploration stage in which I draw influences from various places and try styles I enjoy until I get that eureka moment.
Anyway, my buddy, Alon, is also in this biz. He drew Barrell Caskett. We’re in the same game set actually. You should check out his Tumblr. He’s been making neato art stuff lately. Say hi to him for me haha. -

High ResolutionOccupational Hazard (2012)
Adventuring has its highs and lows.
I just wanted to do a really quick painting to unwind tonight. I’ve had a fairly stressful week and I’m sure the next few will, if not more, be as stressful. And I guess this little piece of fan art reflects how I feel. I feel beat, guys.
Anyway, if you haven’t guessed yet, that is supposed to be Finn of Adventure Time. I wanted to try drawing a semi-realist/semi-cartoonish painting thingy and this is pretty much tonight’s end result. It’s an experiment, in all honesty.
Anyway, if you wants it on your walls. It is currently available on my Society 6 as a print. CLICK ME! YEY! PRINTS!
Also, on the subject of Adventure Time. You should go VOTE for Rob’s Adventure Time Shirt thingy. A 5 is the highest you can give and he’d probably really appreciate that. Click Here Please!

(Tim Burton Inspired Pokémon Re-Designs)
First generation starters are done! Whew!
I can’t believe the response this little side-project has gotten though. Crazy! Thanks a lot guys!
And yes, I was planning to finish the 151 at the very least. But I’m pretty busy most of the time so I can’t post these regularly. But I will update when I can. :)
Also, I’ll be responding to the messages some of you have sent… eventually.

High ResolutionIt’s The Dark Knight Rises Week! So I thought I might as well post this and because I’ve nothing worth posting except old files. I made this for a Dark Knight shirt competition a while back. If the glow looks weird, it’s because of the halftone. I had to make it silk-screen friendly. Aaawww yissss! Art school know-how!
Anyway, you can click it to embiggen, which I recommend. It’s a 1440x900 png, so you can download it and use it as your desktop wallpaper if you want. Like me. So we can be desktop buddies this week. Can you think of anything cooler?
Yes. Yes you could. But I’ll still be stoked for Batman. FAVORITE SUPER-HERO CHARACTER EVER! Even though I always root for The Joker, because my love for him shines like his glistening pearly-white smile.
We gon see le movie this weekend hopefully. WOOT!

High ResolutionPapel de Kabayo
This was supposed to be part of a project that didn’t materialize. So I was left with a few pretty ok illustrations. This one is based on those paper maché horses I see all the time in local shops in Antipolo.
Thinking of expanding the illustration and turn it into a shirt design.
